You smiled at the sky above, spreading out your arms as you did so in order to comb your fingers through the cool grass where you lay in solitude. The gentle midsummer breeze kissed past your face, stopping to rustle your hair before drifting onwards to caress the skin of the next person it passed. The sky was the colour of a bruise tonight, a murky eggplant hue littered with stitch marks of constellations. You absentmindedly lifted a hand to trace them, index finger gliding across the milky pointers as if you were completing and interstellar dot-to-dot. Your eyes fluttered closed as you breathed blissfully inwards, inhaling the calming aroma of the humid evening air.

It was tranquil and quiet here, a good distance away from the action of the campsite you and your friends had set up earlier today, yet in the distance you could still faintly hear the shouts and laughter of your friends travelling across the breeze, no doubt enjoying their time together around the campfire as they drank and retold stories that you’d all shared together. It had been a while now since you’d told them that you were stepping out for a short break from the party and by now you were certain that someone would have come looking to retrieve you, yet it seemed that you were still alone and you found yourself thinking that they must have been too caught up in the festivities to send somebody searching.  Not that you particularly minded, you were happy enough to simply sit and stare at the vast stretch of darkening sky above you, alone with your thoughts as you bathed in its velvet dusk. Sighing in contentment, you rested your head back against your arms, tempted to drift off right there in the middle of the field.

Until a bat swooped low inches from your face, violently startling you as its wings lightly grazed your cheek as it chased a moth. You sat up abruptly in shock, emitting an audible shriek as you did so. A deep chuckle resonated from nearby, surprising you further, your pulse drummed in your ears as you whipped your head around in the direction of the sound.

You sighed in relief upon realising it was none other than Yami. As if on cue he stepped closer towards where you were rigidly sat and your shocked and slightly irritated expression quickly melted into a cheerful grin. His boots shone in the moonlight as he practically glided over to you before he dropped down to seat himself next to you on the grassy slope. Your posture relaxed considerably as you turned to face him, admiring the way his eyes shone with mulberry curiosity as they scanned the various clusters that hung above his head. You paused for a moment longer before you spoke in order to appreciate the way the light of the moon brought a glow to his face, casting over his cheekbones and making his eyes glimmer as if they were made of stardust.

“I’m guessing they sent you to bring me back then?,” your tone was light and friendly as you spoke to the boy beside you, catching his attention and causing his gaze to move over to your direction. He smiled as his eyes found your own and you felt your heart involuntarily flutter against your ribcage as your gazes locked,

“Actually, I decided to come out here and look for you after I noticed that you were missing. Besides, I was growing rather tired of acting as Yugi’s wingman to be quite honest, he’s really not getting anywhere with Téa.”

You let out a short, sympathetic laugh as you thought of your smaller friend,

“Poor guy, he tries so hard.”

Yami nodded in agreement at your statement before the two of you fell silent once again, you found yourself blushing slightly as your mind processed what Yami had said earlier, the fact that he had decided to come and seek you out individually, despite the fact that there were already a considerable amount of other people present at the party who would have been available for him to talk to, made you flush with happiness –though then again, the two of you were rather close friends, so perhaps it was down to that. You mentally slapped yourself for letting your affections for the tri-coloured haired boy cloud your judgement. Yet still your mood faltered slightly in disappointment as that last thought continued to circulate around your mind.

Perhaps it was down to the alcohol that you had consumed earlier as you’d sat around the heat of the campfire with the others, but tonight your urge to just reach over and kiss the leather clad teen were stronger than ever, despite the doubt in your mind urging you not to. As always, you resisted the temptation, choosing to instead allow your eyes drift upwards, mimicking Yami’s own gaze towards the stars. You wondered whether he’d ever seen such a huge plain of the twinkling lights during his past life as an Egyptian pharaoh,

“I can see why you chose to come here,” Yami’s voice cut through the silence, your muscles flexed slightly in surprise, though it seemed the violet-eyed boy had failed to notice this, his eyes remaining firmly glued on the crescent shaped moon as he spoke, “It truly is a beautiful sight.”

You’re a beautiful sight Yami

You longed to say the words to him, but you were nowhere near intoxicated enough to allow them to tumble past your lips, so instead you simply hummed in agreement. Yami chuckled as he turned towards you yet again, the faintest scent of alcohol present in his breath as he let out a content sigh, the warmth of it fanning across your face softly. He stretched his arms out above his head for a moment before returning them to rest at his sides, accidentally brushing your fingers with the tips of his own in the process. Tiny volts skimmed across your skin at the brief contact. A surge of sudden unexpected confidence surged through your veins and suddenly you could no longer resist the urge to confess any more. Nervously you determinedly, you parted your lips to speak to the young man,

“Yami...” you trailed off, the sudden rush of confidence solidifying as it hit your stomach before leaving you completely stranded mid sentence. He rolled onto his side, facing you directly as one arm supported his head, the digits of the other drew patterns in the grass nonchalantly. You took one lingering glance at his face and lost your edge completely.

“I’m...” you struggled to find the words to replace your failed confession “I’m really glad that we’re friends Yami.” You almost cursed your cowardliness towards the situation aloud, heart hammering against your chest with such a ferocity it felt as though it would burst at any moment. The pale teen smiled, eyes soft but still so unreadable. Gosh, of all the things you could have said, you just had to choose the most cliché statement in the entire history of failed confessions! Still, at least Yami seemed happy enough at what you’d said, yet there was still an irritable confusion scratching at the back of your mind, could it be that you had wanted him to be disappointed by what you said? Perhaps, but right now your head was swimming with a slurry of emotions and part of you wanted little more than to run back to the party, down a few more shots of vodka and forget about this whole confusing ideal once the dull ache of a hangover clawed at you in the morning. The irony of the entire situation was that you’d excused yourself to this private little location in order to relax a little, yet at the moment you were feeling more stressed out than ever about your feelings towards the boy whose starlight framed face stared back at you, those gemstone like eyes glittering with unknowing bemusement. Slowly, you found yourself falling into a state of calmness once again as you focused on his hypnotising gaze.

The two of you continued to lie beside each other on the slick grass, the comfortable silence broken on occasion by the odd snippet of conversation, until it became obvious by the way in which the distant noise of the crowd had dimmed down to a low murmur of voices and occasional laughter, that it was time the two of you retired to your tents for the night. The pair of you walked back to the dwindling crowd of people together, neither of you spoke, you didn’t need to as you listened to the song of the crickets and owls that sounded throughout the air like a nocturnal orchestra. The light of the moon illuminated your path, yet you were still cautious not to lose your footing as you trudged steadily up the banking towards camp, the sound of the occasional shout or gleeful drunken slur had drawn closer now. At this point all that separated both of you from the few people that remained outside of their tents was a large tree, its many branches swaying slightly in time with your hair as the breeze blew through it, you shivered slightly at its cold touch as it wrapped around you. You came to a halt behind the trunk of the old tree, its girth almost stretching the width the two of you stood apart, it had now dawned on you that now was the time to bid your company goodnight. You turned on your heel to face him, your back rested against the surface of the oak’s torso as you began your goodbyes to the spiky haired teen, however before you had barely managed to utter a syllable you found a hand upon your cheek, its twin pressing an index finger against your ajar lips in a shushing motion, all the while Yami smiled down at you, clearly amused at the look of bewilderment that now displayed upon your features. The heat flew to your cheeks at his warm touch, their rosy colour intensifying further as his face began to descend towards your own. Hot breath fanned across your heated flesh for a second before thin lips pressed themselves against your slightly quivering ones in a lingering kiss. The hand that previously rested on your cheek moved to tangle within your hair and you found yourself willingly kissing back, your entire body prickled with emotion. You’d have pinched yourself to ensure that this wasn’t just some wonderful dream had your hands not currently been occupied as you clutched at Yami’s chest, lightly grasping at its leather clad surface as you leaned in deeper to his embrace.

All too soon he pulled away, leaving you with swollen lips and an aching for him to touch you again. You stood speechless; your eyes searched his for an explanation to your unspoken question. He simply smiled at you knowingly as he wished you goodnight before walking off in the direction of his tent.

The feeling of his fingers still tingled across your skin long after you’d watched him leave.

I should probably start off by mentioning that obviously the reader and all their friends are of the legal age to drink in this story, though age is never mentioned I can assure you that I wrote this with all the intention of it being that way.

This is something I wrote while on holiday after pulling a few word prompts from a list of vauge ideas I made, I'm actually really quite happy with how this came out, though of course, constructive criticism and pointing out errors in the text are appreciated and encouraged!

I actually felt a little conflicted over whether to refer to Yami as "Atem" or "Yami", but I chose the latter because it seems like that’s the name that most people refer to him as.

Of course I pose no intention towards claiming the ownership of the yugioh franchise or any of its relevant characters.
